One Church Street Food Pantry Suffers Major Building Damage

On Feb. 4, One Church Street Food Pantry Director, Mary Gilmour, announced that a flood, stemming from a burst pipe temporarily closed the Food Pantry. The Restoration Company was on location the same day. They cleaned up all the soggy tiles, wet bread, cardboard boxes and debris. They also had an industrial sized water sucking machine that worked on drying out the carpeting.

The next day, Pantry volunteers Mary, MariJo and Pat came in to check out what needed to be tossed (not as much as you might think!) and help clean up the shelves. They were, as always, hard-working and cheerful, and the only reason they were there was so they would be ready for our guests to arrive that weekend.

On Feb. 7, the Pantry was able to give out pre-packed bags of food during its regularly scheduled Saturday open hours. OCS is working hard to reestablish our Free Choice Pantry in some way for this week.

As of Feb. 9, the Restoration Company was still on the job and were cutting open some of the insulation around the ducts in the reception area because it is soaking wet. They were also opening up the spaces where water has bubbled up the paint in order to help the walls dry out. There are still massive blowers, fans and other heating elements providing constant warmth and moving air to continue the process of drying out the space.

The adjuster is scheduled to be at OCS on Feb. 10, to go through the building to begin the process of estimating the cost of the damage.

Our spirits can’t be dampened!

August 28, 2024  The pics below are images from yesterday – Food Pantry delivery day. I nearly swoon when I see so many fresh veggies come out of the van, thanks to Kristina and her mom, who went to the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York yesterday. But it is hard work loading, unloading and putting all this on shelves.

By the end of today, shelves will be empty again but our guests will have nutritious foods to share with their families. Approximately one ton of food per week arrives, is unloaded by volunteers, and heads home with our guests.

And have you ever heard of Super Milk? That container needs a cape!!!

August 22, 2024 – What an extraordinary night of gathering friends, families, volunteers, supporters and folks who are just learning about OCS!! We are grateful to Union Hall Inn RestaurantCaroga Arts CollectiveMarissa Mae’s Confections LLC, and our sponsors John and Sunday Blackmon. It felt like a family reunion in the best way!

August 13, 2024 – How much Good News? Hmmmm….how much time do you have?

Pic 2: Lexington employees April, Emily and Sherry came to speak with us about a cleaning crew AND about volunteering for the Pantry. Partnering with Lexington Center has been a core goal of our OCS project. Today that goal became a reality! See what I mean? All Good News! So grateful for our community.

August 3, 2024 – Vinnie gets it. He understands that not everyone who comes to the Pantry is an adult. He understands that families come in together to get the food they need. But does it have to be a chore? Well, today Vinnie from Toying Around called me and said he had a ‘heavy gift’ for OCS. Gold bars? Bags of coins? Nope. A child-sized arcade game for the little ones who end up waiting while mom or dad or grandma get the food they need. Vinnie also pointed out that it is reminiscent of the old Y that had a pool table and other games for kids to play. Thanks for really thinking about our neighbors, Vinnie, and thanks for being such a Superhero to us.

July 27, 2024 – FIRST DAY!! Thanks to our dedicated Pantry volunteers. And thanks to the gentleman who brought all those fresh cucumbers to give away. (Favorite cucumber recipe?)
